Nilüfer Koç

Nilüfer Koç is a prominent Kurdish political figure and advocate for Kurdish self-determination.

She serves as the spokesperson for the Commission on Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), a coalition of Kurdish political parties and civil society organisations based in Brussels. Born on March 10, 1969, in Ardahan, northern Kurdistan, Koç moved to Germany in 1976 as the child of Kurdish migrant workers and pursued studies in political science at the University of Bremen.

Koç has been instrumental in promoting dialogue among Kurdish political entities and civil society groups across the four regions of Kurdistan. Between 2013 and 2018, she focused on fostering national unity efforts in southern Kurdistan (Iraq) and Rojava (northeastern Syria). Internationally, she has been active in raising awareness about the Kurdish people's right to self-determination and advocating for the active participation of women in all areas of society and politics.

A key aspect of Koç's work involves campaigning for the release of Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned Kurdish leader. She emphasises that Öcalan's freedom is essential for initiating a democratic solution to the Kurdish question and achieving lasting peace in the region.

In addition to her political activism, Koç has engaged in cultural diplomacy. Notably, she co-organised the "New World Embassy: Kurdistan" project in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2023. This initiative served as a symbolic "stateless embassy" representing Kurdish aspirations for self-governance and highlighted alternative models of democracy beyond the traditional nation-state framework.

Koç continues to be a leading voice in advocating for Kurdish rights, democratic reforms, and international solidarity with marginalised communities.
