Meetings with Senior AANES Officials

Our Parliamentary Delegation met with senior officials from the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria, Syrian Democratic Council and Syrian Democratic Forces.

Meeting with Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair, Foreign Relations Department, Autonomous Administration of North East Syria

Talking Points:

  • Emphasis on ongoing dialogue among Kurdish parties, noting that a Kurdish national conference will lead to the formation of a joint committee to advance unity talks and constitutional efforts.

  • Need for inclusive participation in drafting a new Syrian constitution. Preparatory committees will be formed to represent all communities before the drafting process begins.

  • On economic matters, Ahmed clarified that AANES is exempt from broad U.S. sanctions, with specific guidelines outlining permissible investments. However, she noted that many NGOs have relocated to Damascus in recent years.

  • Ahmed also addressed continued Turkish military attacks across Rojava and the intentional cutting of water to Hasakeh Province, which has left around one million people without access to clean drinking water.

Meeting with Mahmud Muslit & Leyla Qahraman, Co-Chairs, Syrian Democratic Council

Talking Points:

  • The Delegation was received by the Syria Democratic Council (SDC), the political wing of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. The delegation met with SDC Co-Chairs Mahmud Muslit and Leyla Qahraman.

  • Muslit offered a detailed overview of the SDC’s structure and governance model since its establishment in Rojava, reaffirming the SDC’s commitment to combating terrorism through all available means.

  • Muslit confirmed that negotiations with Damascus are ongoing and emphasised the crucial role the UK, EU, and broader international community can play in shaping Syria’s future.
Meeting with General Commander Mazloum Abdi & Rohelat Afrin, Syrian Democratic Forces
  • During the delegation’s visit to Hasakah, SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi confirmed that a temporary and fragile ceasefire with Turkey is currently in place, brokered with support from the US, UK, and France. He stressed the SDF’s hope for a permanent ceasefire, noting contributions from recent agreements with Damascus and Öcalan’s peace appeal.

  • Abdi reiterated that SDF forces will remain active and will not be disbanded, emphasising their role in ensuring local security. He also highlighted efforts to strengthen Kurdish unity, including plans for a national Kurdish conference and further dialogue with the Syrian government on civil and administrative matters.
