Democracy Under Pressure: Supporting Kurdish Rights and Peace in Türkiye

At this year’s Labour Party Annual Conference, the Centre for Kurdish Progress convened a significant discussion on the shrinking democratic space in Türkiye and the ongoing struggle for Kurdish rights.

Speakers reflected on how Kurdish communities, politicians, and activists continue to champion peace, pluralism, and human rights in the face of escalating repression. The conversation highlighted the importance of international solidarity, the role of the UK in advocating for democratic freedoms, and the urgent need for a peaceful and just resolution to the Kurdish question.

Speakers included:

  • Rupa Huq MP, Labour MP for Ealing Central and Acton

  • Simon Dubbins, Director of International, UNITE the Union

  • Mariela Kohon, Trades Union Congress (TUC)

  • Chair: Clare Baker, International Officer, UNITE the Union

The event drew a committed audience of parliamentarians, trade unionists, and Labour members, all engaging in a timely dialogue on justice, resilience, and the path towards lasting peace in Türkiye.

The Centre for Kurdish Progress thanks the speakers and attendees for their insights and solidarity.
